When I began homeschooling, I did so with a vision of academic excellence and perfection in all areas of life.

Six years later I’m just happy that they’re learning something, that our relationships are strong, the house is ‘mostly’ tidy (don’t look too closely), and I’m no longer in the black hole of burn out (just). I’m finally learning that it pays to be ‘flexible’: to make plans and be prepared to throw them out when it all goes sour. Or, at the very least, to be prepared to re-envisage the situation.

My brain’s natural immunity against change makes this VERY HARD and I’m hoping that my story and tips will help ease the path for others who are similarly ‘flexibility-resistant’, as well as encourage the ‘cognitively-supple’ to remember to utilise their natural ability.

Aimée has been homeschooling for 7 years. Aimée and both children have several ND acronyms after their names.

Over time Aimée learned that parenting and educating in the neurodiverse context is VERY different to what others experience.

Aimée now spend all her time studying (formally and informally) autism and related topics so that she can implement the knowledge into her own family life and do her very best to ensure her children succeed.

The joy Aimée feels in her children’s growth is only matched when she can extend this knowledge and experience in supporting other families out there to thrive.
